It depends on what your general interests are. I am studying to become an engineer, and love to work with my hands, to build things better and better. I got into R/C and it was right up my alley. I love it! In my opinion, the electric versions can be easier to maintain and run, but their nitro counterparts can be too if you learn how to tune them, etc. they always need to be re-tuned.
A good idea is to see if there is a local offroad r/c track near you. if there is, see if they have a slash class. this class is all skill, as you have to have the stock truck to race in it. It is a nice entry level. If they do, or if you just want to drive around and have fun at home, skateparks, etc. the Traxxas slash is a great first truck.
This combo here comes with everything you need to start having fun for $275! It comes with the truck, the radio, motor, electronics, battery, charger, and even AA batteries for your radio. and tower hobbies always has 10%-30% discounts or free shipping on orders over $100.
one neat thing with that truck that you cannot do with nitro is that it is 100% waterproof. I mean you can drop it in a swimming pool and drive around on the bottom. It also will not cost you another cent more than the day you get it(not including replacement AA batteries). This is alot nicer than the $30 a gallon nitro fuel and constant engine maintenance.
This is an awesome truck for the value, and is tons of fun. And if you end up not liking it, It normally resells for between $100 and $150 depending on the condition of it.
